The 2.00pm Bristol and Exeter Railway service from Taunton to Chard Joint has arrived behind Broad Gauge 4-4-0 ST No 68. Waiting in the bay platform is Standard Gauge London and South Western 2-2-2 Tank “Chaplin” with the 3.50pm service to Chard Road. Some of the track at Chard Joint was laid to mixed gauge to facilitate the interchange of goods traffic between the two companies. The Bristol and Exeter Company’s Chard branch remained broad gauge until July 1891 to prevent the standard gauge London & South Western Railway obtaining running rights into Taunton.
